In utter silence, I used to have to fall asleep. The problem is twofold: First, any sound is very difficult to manage on earphones (and I never sleep on earplugs), and secondly, my own spin-off thoughts have left me alone.
I tried as a joke to ASMR, but now I am relying on those whispering videos to distract my brain from sleeping — without being interesting enough to warrant my full attention.
Sadly, it means every night to pick a new video and I have no choice.

Naturally, I first thought about my all-out solution: is there a book that can help? I’ve stumbled to podcasts mostly asleep. What if I was sleeping instead in an audiobook? It’s a little holy, so I’m ready to get beyond this.
My colleague, Book Rioters, had a long list of audiobooks that I thought I would share with you! You should stick to books you have already read if you are worried about missing something in the novel.
Alternatively, many players in the listening book have a feature where they pause automatically after a certain period so that you can hear the book in a sleepy mood for around 10 – 30 minutes and then drift away after a pause.

Best Audiobooks to Help You Sleep Faster
- The Life And Times Of The Thunderbolt Kid: Travels Through my Childhood
Another favorite audiobook and a calming narrator, Bill Bryson, is Book Rioters. He is able to select a lot of titles, but some are narrated in an abbreviated version only. I enjoyed his A Brief History of Almost All so I’m sure his other books will go well too.
Some people claim that when his mother sent him to school in lime-green Capri panties, Bill Bryson did not come from Planet Earth. At the age of six, some assume that everything began with the discovery of an unusual woolen jersey. There was a golden thunderbolt through the moth-holed chest. It might seem like a soccer sweater from old college, but young Bryson knew better. It’s the Sacred Jersey of Zap, obviously, and it proves that he’s put in the center of America with this harmless family to ride, become invisibly, fire weapons from a distance and wear his slippers like Superman over its jeans.
Best About This Audiobook
This audiobook grows up at a certain time. But, in Bryson’s hands, it’s the story of everyone, of anyone who’s been ever young, talking volumes. It’s a great audiobook for you to help calmly sleep during bedtimes.
- Atonement
Briony Tallis, 13, saw her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes on the hottest day of summer 1934, and dive into a fountain in her country house backyard. Her mate, as Cecilia has recently descended from Cambridge, is watching Robbie Turner.
The lives of these three are forever changed by the end of the day. Robbie and Cecilia are going to have crossed a border they had not even dreamed of before, and become the victims of the imagination of the younger girl. Briony may have encountered mysteries and has committed a crime that she will want to remedy for the remainder of her life.
Best About This Audiobook
Atonement is a prestigious narrative with a gradual development. This book is characterized by favorable reviews as a silent, reflective, moving tale. It’s dull and frustrating to get through the negative evaluations. It sounds like a decent book for the dormant. It sounds like either way. I have heard that the version Jill Tanner narrated is relaxing, so let me know if anyone has a tip on which narrator has the most calming voice!

- The Secret History
While Donna Tartt’s earlier novel The Hidden Past is known better by The Goldfinch, an amazing audiobook of cults. It also includes one of my favorite quotes about not sleeping:
There is nothing more lonely and distortive than sleeplessness. Then I spent my night reading Greek till four in the morning until the only light in Monmouth House was mine until I had my eyes burning and my mind swam. When the alphabet started to turn into incoherent triangles and pitchforks and it was difficult for me to focus further on Greek, I read The Great Gatsby. It is my favorite book, and I took it out of the bookstore in the hope of cheering me up.
I had taken it from the library in the expectation that it would cheer me up. It just made me feel worse, naturally, because I didn’t see anything in my own humorless state except for what I perceived as some tragic synchronizations between Gatsby and myself.
Best About This Audiobook
The Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Donna Tartt in this brilliant novel offers us a richly structured and hypnotic golden youth’s tale, which is tainted by her own vanity.
